Panama Canal--Machu Picchu

January 16-24, 2015, Amazon extension Jan. 24-29.

Friday.  A leisurely mid afternoon departure from Orlando puts you in Panama City in time for dinner September 20, 2013. Direct from Orlando on Copa Air CM 0479. (Flights from JFK, Dulles, Denver, Houston arrive at various other times, naturally.)

Saturday. Transit the Panama Canal from the Pacific to the Atlantic,

a distance of only 48 miles. See one of the engineering marvels of the 20th Century. Much of the original machinery is still in use. Electricity generated by the artificial Lake Gatun powered the canal locks from the start. Return from the Atlantic side by bus.

  Sunday, Transfer to Lima.

Spend the afternoon and evening exploring the area around Kennedy Park, the center of the Miraflores district, an area of interesting architecture and sidewalk restaurants.

  Monday.  Tour Lima.

 Tuesday. Transfer to Cusco.

By air across the high Andes. Take the rest of the day to acclimate to the high altitude, 11,300 feet. (Tour scheduling liable to sudden changes owing to local conditions.)

Wednesday. Continue acclimating to altitude and tour colonial and Inca sites in and near Cuzco.

Thursday, Machu Picchu.

Not far by miles but thousands of feet lower and the climate is subtropical. We leave on an early train and return to Cuzco in the evening.

 Friday.

Free day in Cusco. Tour Sacred Valley sites (at your discretion).

Saturday--Fly directly from Cusco to Lima and on to Orlando. (Or continue on with the Amazon extension, see below.)

  Arrive Orlando 10:53 PM.

What you get.  All air transportation and transfers to hotels and group tours, lodging, tour of Panama Canal,  city tour of Lima, Cuzco city tour, transfer to and entrance to Machu Picchu.   (Owing to variables beyond control of tour operator, the itinerary is subject to change.) Amazon Extension

Saturday.  Arrive at Puerto Maldonado by Star Peru flight. Tour this interesting frontier city, with little four wheel traffic. Right, fresco on wall of huge observation tower in center of town celebrates its heritage.
Sunday.  Start early on trek to Sandoval Lake. It requires a two mile hike and a canoe jaunt across a pristine tropical lake. (Some Amazon tours may be modified to accommodate the composition of the group or  weather conditions.)

Spend the night at rustic but comfortable lodge in Amazon wilderness. Observe Amazonia as few get the chance to see it.
Tuesday.  Return to Puerto Maldonado. Spend night at Anaconda Lodge in its own rain forest near airport. Visit nearby butterfly garden and serpentarium, should you like.

Wednesday.  Fly to Lima. Spend night in comfort and return to Orlando (or points north) on Thursday.
